Tony Roulstone

Tony Roulstone has decades of experience as an engineer and senior manager in the nuclear industry, in the aerospace sectors and in high technology business consulting.

He received his degree from the University of Cambridge and has spent much of his career in the nuclear and aerospace industries, starting with UKAEA working at Dounreay’s 250MWe liquid metal-cooled fast reactor and reprocessing system. This was followed by 20 years at Rolls-Royce becoming MD of the Nuclear Group, which designed, produced and supported 30 reactors for the RN submarines, also it produced major systems for UK high temperature AGRs and for the UKs large PWR at Sizewell.

He established and taught on the Nuclear Energy Masters programme in the Department of Engineering at Cambridge and led research projects on SMR design and economics, including the crucial importance of adopting production engineering methods for SMRs.

Also, he is involved with studies of both on the design of national energy systems for net-zero in 2050 and on the industrialisation and the economics of fusion energy. He was a key contributor to the Royal Society’s 2023 study of Long Duration Energy Storage. He has an extensive range of publications.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a Fellow of the Nuclear Institute. He is an independent adviser on SMR design.
